ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to enter a project, a student must be attending classes at a public or private middle or high school in the Province of New Brunswick and be in grade 6 or above.

Maximum number of projects per school: 6
If your school district is holding a district fair, schools must compete in the district fair. Otherwise, each school may register a maximum of 6 projects in their Regional Science Fair. Due to the large number of entries and the calibre of projects at the Regional Fair, only the best projects should be sent. If the number of entries received exceeds the space limitations of the venue, the Chair of the New Brunswick Regional Science Fair Committee reserves the right to accept fewer projects per school. (We suggest sending only your first-prize winners from each division to your Regional Science Fair).

The maximum number of projects from a District Fair: 36
District fairs may register a maximum of 12 projects from grades 6-8, 12 projects from grades 9-10, and 12 projects from grades 11-12. (Again, we suggest sending the top 2 winners in each division to the Regional Science Fair). Only Grades 7 and above are eligible to participate in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.



PROJECT CLASSIFICATIONS

Exhibits will be classified for awards in 2 categories: Junior (Grades 6-8) and Senior (Grades 9-12). N.B. Entries submitted by Grade 6 students are not eligible for Grand Prizes.

To ensure judges have the relevant background and comfort level to judge projects, all projects must be registered as either Biology or Physical Sciences.

Why have the divisions been eliminated?

Our goal is to ensure that the best projects receive medals, regardless of the type of science that the project focuses on. Projects used to be classified for judging into divisions according to the type of science (e.g. Computing & Information Technology, Health Sciences, etc.).

Starting in 2011, however, all projects will be judged for medals against all others in their grade category (i.e. junior or senior). Significant variance in the number of projects per division meant that excellent projects in large divisions sometimes went unrecognized. The same changes have been implemented at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) beginning in 2011. CWSF finalists, delegates, and parents no longer need worry about whether a project is registered in the right division.



EXHIBITS

1. All exhibits must be confined to a table or floor space not to exceed 1.2 meters wide by 0.6 meters deep. Height of exhibits is limited to 1.5 meters. Exhibits that exceed the dimensions given may be disqualified. Exhibitors must plan for this allotted space only.
2. Group projects (maximum of 2 students) may be entered. In the event of an award, the prize is shared equally between the students.
3. The same exhibitor may not display an identical exhibit at any subsequent New Brunswick Science Fair. However, a project may be improved and entered again in competition.
4. Construction of exhibits must be sturdy, with moving parts firmly attached and approved for safety. Each exhibit must be self-supporting. Electricity (AC 110V, 60 Hz) will be supplied; however, the host venue will not provide gas, running water, or any other material.
5. An exhibitor may not present more than one exhibit each year.



SAFETY RULES

1. Displays must be solidly constructed. Moving pieces, if any, must be firmly attached and present no danger of accident. Switches and cords must be of the approved variety and circuits adequately protected. Cell or battery-fed circuits should be safe both in design and operation. Pressure vessels must be equipped with safety valves and gas cylinders stabilized.
2. Open flames, live animals, inflammable liquids, microbial cultures, plants and soil, biodegradable material and lasers in working order may not be exhibited.
3. No toxic, corrosive or dangerous chemicals are allowed at the Science Fair. Substitutes, such as sugar, water, food dyes, salt, flour and molasses, must be used to simulate dangerous chemicals.

JUDGING

1. Exhibitors must be present during the judging sessions for demonstration of their project and interviews. Exhibitors should be prepared to present their work to the judges in five minutes or less.
2. The decision of the judges shall be final in all cases.
3. Judging is based on the following criteria:
Scientific Thought: 45
Creativity: 25
Dramatic Value: 10
Written Report: 10
Skill: 10
TOTAL: 100



MANAGEMENT

1. The New Brunswick Regional Science Fair reserves the right to assign equally to exhibitors the available display space and to exclude exhibits of a nature dangerous to exhibitors, visitors and the premises.
2. An exhibitor may not leave his or her display unattended during visiting hours, up to the closure of the fair.
3. While every effort will be made to prevent damage to exhibits, neither the Youth Science Canada Foundation nor Science East nor other sponsoring organizations and co-operating groups assumes responsibility for loss or damage to any exhibit or part thereof.



AWARDS

Up to 6 Grand Prizes will be awarded to New Brunswick students and will consist of an expenses-paid trip to participate in the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Montreal, Quebec May 15-20, 2016. Only grades 7 and above are eligible for Grand Prizes.



HINTS ON PROJECT DESIGN

1. Each project must be self-supporting.
2. Construction may be of rigid cardboard, light veneer or plywood, but may not be of styrofoam.
3. No material such as posters, graphs, etc. is allowed on walls, columns, in front of the table or other area of the exhibition hall.
4. Arrange all project information and material within the allowable space: 1.2m (width) x 0.6m (depth) x 1.5m (height).
5. Plan the project taking into consideration the clarity, safety and neatness, ease of transportation, and ease of assembly/disassembly.
6. Dangerous chemicals are not allowed and must be simuolated by safe substances such as salt, sugar, colour water, etc.
7. The use of open flame is not permitted. Pressure vessels must have a safety valve.
8. Projects that do not conform to requirements will be refused.



REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

1. Online portion
All registrations for Regional Science Fairs must be completed online. Please note: Absolutely no entries will be accepted after the registration deadline!

2. Documentation
In addition to the signed documents which must be sent as part of the registration process, a project report should be e-mailed. The report should be a maximum of 5 pages and must include the title of the project, the name of the participant(s), the name of the school as well as the following:
  • Introduction, background, purpose
  • Hypothesis
  • Methods and procedures
  • Results, observations and conclusion/discussion
  • Acknowledgements
  • References
  • Changes to a project continued from a previous year
  • Bibliography
